Coast to Coast Sperm Donation currently works only with Identified, Identity Disclosure and Semi-identified Donor arrangements. We have a six-family limit on donations, and we provide opportunities for donors to be known to recipients, to participate in identity release or to be exclusive to a more limited number of families. Donors are identified only by a number until such time as they are matched and agree to a donation.

Some donors may choose to go through our frozen vials program. This means the donor doesn’t have to wait to be matched before receiving compensation and the frozen vials are available to recipients directly from Coast to Coast. Donors will still have the opportunity to speak with recipients, and our family limits will remain the same.

Identity disclosure means the donor is one who agrees that his full name can be released to a donor conceived person who reaches age 18, proves the genetic connection and requests the information. Many countries in the world require the automatic release of information without the request of the child or knowledge of the donor. In the U.S., the current requirements for identity release vary by State, but may include full name, a phone number, last known address, and an email address. Coast to Coast supports release of identity; therefore, we require an identity disclosure agreement with our donors. We will only release information upon request of the person who has evidence he/she is a genetic offspring of the donor. We will not automatically release any donor information without an attempt to notify the donor first. If the donor can’t be reached within 30 days of the request, we will release the information. It is the donor’s responsibility to provide his updated contact information if he wants to know when someone requests his identifying information.

The primary difference between the two types of donors is when the identity of the donor is shared. In an Identified donation, also referred to as known sperm donor, the donor agrees to the release of full or limited information to the recipient at time of donation or once a birth is confirmed. These types of arrangements often provide for an agreement of future contact between the donor and child once the child reaches age 18. The identifying information shared between the parties is based upon the desire of the parties, but may also be based on the clinic’s requirements, which varies from clinic to clinic. The information shared could be as simple as having a phone call or video chat in which first names or full names are used by the parties, or it could mean sharing all identifying information with one another at the time of the donation. The FDA requires that a known or identified donor must be known to the person carrying the child if there are any guidelines that are waived. So in some cases it means the sperm donor must be known to the gestational surrogate and not the intended parent. With an identity disclosure donor, the parties may share no information at the time of the donation or birth, but the donor’s identifying information is shared at the time the donor conceived person reaches age 18, proves a DNA connection and requests the identifying information of the donor.

Depending on how much of the donated specimen is required for a recipient to attain a pregnancy, the vials may be frozen for future pregnancy attempts or to have additional children that are genetically related. Due to our agency policy of a six-family unit limit, recipients agree that any unused sperm is destroyed once a family completes his/her/their family unless otherwise agreed upon by all parties. It is not to be donated to other families.

We believe every donor should know if the donation resulted in a birth for the purposes of his own family planning, but it is not required. The exact terms of if or when that information is released will be determined at the time of match and written into the legal agreement between recipient and donor. As an agency, we require our families to provide birth information and updated medical/ genetic information that could affect any future children of the donor. We will contact the donor should we learn of any medical or genetic condition that could affect his own children, and we ask our donors to contact us should they learn of anything that could affect a donor child.

The process of donating sperm through a local clinic typically takes 10-15 hours; although, the wait time for medical or genetic test results may take a few weeks before determining final eligibility of a donor and the donation can begin. Donors who are required to travel for a donation may do some testing locally, and then travel for the actual donation of specimens. All traveling donors receive flights, hotel, ground transportation and a meal allowance as well as their compensation.

For directed sperm donation, the average compensation paid to a first-time donor is $5-$10,000, plus travel expenses, if required. We present all offers to a donor and allow the donor to make the final decision with input from the recipient. Compensation is collected and held in a separate trust account or escrow account. The compensation is generally paid out at various milestones, such as the completion of the prescreening sperm analysis, genetic testing and infectious disease testing, criminal and civil background check and psychological evaluation. The donor receives the majority of funds once the donation occurs and the follow up (mandatory) FDA testing is completed. Donors are presented with a breakdown of the compensation at the time of a match. Donor compensation is NOT conditioned on a birth; rather it is conditioned on a successful screening, adherence to all clinic criteria and the depositing of specimens for procreational use.

A sperm donor must be of legal age and no older than 38 years of age. He must have a good medical, mental health and genetic family history. He must have a healthy BMI and live a healthy lifestyle. He must not smoke, vape or take any medications not prescribed to him by a primary physician. He should not use recreational drugs or have a high alcohol consumption on a regular basis. All donors must practice safe sex techniques to prevent STDs (sexually transmitted diseases.) While it is not mandatory, most of our recipients prefer a donor who is in college or has completed a degree.

Yes, Coast to Coast Sperm Donation will expend much time and financial resources to determine the eligibility for a donor’s acceptance into our program, which includes medical and genetic screening, background checks and psychological assessment. Due to our six-family unit limit, we ask that our donors agree they will not donate through any other program or sperm bank. We will have donors sign an agreement regarding exclusivity to Coast to Coast. This does not mean a donor can’t have his own children.
